Reddit, a well-known discussion platform, has begun airdropping NFT collectible avatars to its most “diehard” users. This reward is based on “karma points” that reward users for their contributions to the community. Below is everything about the airdrop.

  • Reddit drew inspiration for the avatars from its mascot, the character “Snoo.”
  • Users can select avatars in four styles, involving “Aww Friends” and “Drip Squad.”
  • The platform didn’t limit its selection to special communities
  • The move represents Reddit’s recent attempt to use blockchain tech.

As Reddit avoids the term “NFT” in airdrop marketing, the avatars fit the bill. They are accessible for buy on OpenSea, with the floor price of one series starting at $15 and the floor price of another series at $42.

Along with the airdrop, Reddit has launched a larger “Collectible avatar” sale where users can buy avatars to use on the site. These avatars differ in price from $9.99 to $99. It is unclear how many have been sold so far.

Reddit’s avoidance of the term “NFT” is probably because of future backlash. NFTs have been a controversial topic, with Reddit users always criticizing the space, the rampant speculation, and environmental damage that NFTs may cause.

To reduce any criticism of environmental damage from the avatar series, Reddit minted the airdropped avatars on the Polygon blockchain, a layer-2 scaling solution for the ETH mainnet. Polygon is known as the greenest blockchain and published a “Green Manifesto” earlier this year.

Though Reddit’s integration of NFT may come as a shock to some, it’s not at all surprising to others. Social media companies and well-known websites have long expressed their plans to use NFTs on their platforms since the NFTs’ debut in 2021. 2- Seven months ago, Reddit first announced that it would be integrating NFTs on its platform. It did this during peak NFT season and said it would allow users to verify the NFTs they used as avatars on the website.

3- Also seven months ago, Twitter revealed that it had added NFT avatar verification to its platform. Presently, users of the NFT community home can indicate that they have the NFT used as their avatar via a specific hexagonal frame.

Plus to revealing its experiment with NFTs seven months ago, Reddit lately released an NFT avatar marketplace. With the newest airdrop, it is likely that it will continue to find ways to integrate NFTs and use the blockchain to improve its platform.
