Facebook Offers Elon Musk Twitter Discussion Moderation
Within hours of Elon Musk’s announcement that Twitter would set up a “Content Moderation Council,” Facebook’s independent Oversight Board said they would “welcome the chance” to talk more about Twitter’s plans for content moderation.
In a tweet, the Oversight Board said
“Independent oversight of how content is moderated is important for building trust in platforms and making sure that users are treated fairly. This model has been proven since 2020. We would like the chance to talk with Twitter about their plans in more detail.”
“The Oversight Board was made to help Facebook answer some of the most difficult questions about online free speech: what to take down, what to leave up, and why,” says Facebook’s official terms. Facebook realized pretty quickly that, with two billion active users, it shouldn’t be the only one who can decide what people can say online and how safe it is.
Meta’s Oversight Board Overview: “Independent oversight of content moderation has a vital role to play in building trust in platforms and ensuring users are treated fairly. This is a model we have been proving since 2020. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss Twitter’s plans in more detail with the company.”
To get a global view and make sure it stays that way, the Oversight Board is made up of people from different social and professional backgrounds, just like the platform itself. These people were chosen because they are professionals and have a lot of experience with thinking carefully and systematically. They are also good at pursuing and making sense of decisions based on a set of rules or policies, and they are familiar with digital content and administration in the modern world.
How it could help Twitter
The Oversight Board thinks it can help Twitter set up the council’s basic structure and work toward a more nuanced standard protocol. In the long run, it could become an Internet-wide standard that all social media sites must follow.
As of the time this article was written, Elon Musk had not replied to the proposal. If there are any changes, they will be posted here.
