Second Ethereum Testnet performs Shanghai Hard Fork with success

On the Sepolia testnet, it was possible to withdraw ETH that had been staked. There will be one more test on the Goerli testnet before Shanghai goes live.

Today, successful withdrawals of staked ether (ETH) were made on a second Ethereum test network (testnet) called Sepolia. This brings the Ethereum blockchain closer to the much-anticipated Shanghai Upgrade.
Upgrade began at epoch 56832 at 4:04 UTC and was finished at 4:17 UTC (11:17 p.m. ET).

The Shanghai Upgrade will finish Ethereum’s move to a fully functional proof-of-stake network, letting validators cash out rewards they’ve earned by adding or approving blocks on the blockchain.

One more test is set to happen on Ethereum’s Goerli testnet before Shanghai goes live.

The goal of the test on Sepolia was to give developers another chance to practice withdrawals like the ones that will happen on the main Ethereum blockchain. Testnets are copies of the main blockchain, in this case, Ethereum, that let developers test changes to apps in a low-risk environment.

This is the second of three ways that Sepolia will be simulated as a testnet. Unlike the first testnet update, which happened earlier this month in Zhejiang, this one happened on a closed test net, which means that the validators on this testnet are only run by Ethereum core engineers. Sepolia has the fewest validators out of the three testnets, which makes it the least important.

In the next few weeks, Goerli will get the last testnet upgrade. That would be the last dress rehearsal before ETH withdrawals with stakes can be done on the main blockchain. Goerli’s testing will also be the most anticipated because it is the largest of the three testnets and its activity is the most like that of the main Ethereum blockchain.

If developers keep doing testnet upgrades every three weeks, the next one on Goerli would probably happen on March 21, which could push the mainnet Shanghai Upgrade into April. If that were true, the developers of Ethereum had said that staked ETH would come out in March, but there would be a small delay if that were true.
