Doodles plans to expand From Genesis Box to millions of NFT avatars

The Genesis Box, a tokenized collection of digital wearables that was auctioned off in June of last year, is now available as part of Doodles 2, the expanded sequel to the Ethereum NFT collection.

Two digital clothing pieces (including footwear, accessories, and outerwear) plus a Doodles 2 beta access code are included in each Genesis Box. Holders may add the same colorful, whimsical flare to their full-body avatars that made Doodles so popular as profile photographs (PFPs).

The Doodles 2 team revealed their intentions to make a sequel in June 2022, and this time they wanted to use millions of NFT avatars rather than only 10,000. Instead of Ethereum PFPs, the focus of the project is on user-created avatars, digital clothing that can be traded, and applications that span many blockchains.

In January, Doodles holders could use a Dooplicator NFT (airdropped to holders) to create PFP-based wearable items. The CEO of Doodles, Julian Holguin, recently revealed to Decrypt that the Genesis Box is a new line of accessories including artwork by Doodles co-founder Scott “Burnt Toast” Martin.

In his own words, Holguin predicted, “There’s going to be some things that is entirely not bound by the principles of physics and just anything that was cooked up in Scott’s and our other designers’ heads that is going to be completely out there.”

What this means is that while the “Dooplicated” wearables introduced Doodles customers to customizable NFT avatars and had them exchanging wearables, the Genesis Box will expand the Doodles IP, and Holguin also indicated that the closed beta launch of the Doodles 2 platform is coming “very, very soon.”

Holguin promised, “You’ll construct the City of your dreams.”

Launched in January, Doodles 2 links Ethereum non-fungible tokens (NFTs) like the Dooplicator and Genesis Box to the Flow platform, where NFTs can be purchased as accessories. According to Holguin, Flow was picked because it can reach a big audience and is simple enough for anyone who aren’t familiar with Web3 to use.

A fortune in doodling?

When will Doodles 2 be released to the public? Holguin elaborated that the initial messaging for Doodles 2 may have been unclear, and that the ultimate goal is to provide millions of people with personalized Doodles avatars.

As he put it, “we were never going to launch millions of NFTs in 2023.” “We maybe should have expressed it a little better.” The plan was to work up to that point and meet customer demand at all times.

Increased demand and Doodles’ intellectual property will necessitate a variety of strategies. For this summer’s “very enormous flagship retail experience,” Holguin boasted of collaborations with other brands and special events. Pharrell Williams, Chief Brand Officer of Doodles, will work with Golden Wolf’s team on music releases and social media posts.

With a valuation of $704 million and $54 million in funding from the previous year, the company is aiming high. It has been challenging to convey these aims to NFT holders.

Doodles expanding its NFT-centric origins

Doodles shareholders have complained that the company’s leadership is not being forthcoming with information. Tensions flared earlier this month after a Discord post by Doodles co-founder Jordan “poopie” Castro went public.

From an upstart, we intend to grow into a major media conglomerate. ‘We are no longer an NFT effort,’ Castro stated. Spending more on short-term, speculative trends like “building in public” would leave us with less to invest in our long-term goals.

After receiving criticism for his comments, Castro tweeted the next day that Doodles would “continue to use NFT tech as the connective tissue between all we do” and that he would “take the L on this one.”

Holguin said that he realized why Castro’s statement was called into question, but it had been “taken out of context,” and he reaffirmed that Doodles is rapidly expanding around its NFT-centric origins rather than away from them.

Holguin elaborated, “We’ve grown outside of a very, very small operation [and] we are now building a major business and a company, and scaling our infrastructure. No, it is not a ‘project’—we have several projects happening within our larger business and company right now.”

According to Holguin, Doodles will retain its NFT-driven “collection environment” but will be expanded into a multifaceted entertainment asset.

Two-stage system. In Doodles 2, players will be able to design their own playable character and use it in other games. It has been hinted that millions of avatars will be used to attract a massive audience.

Yet, the original is still the best. Doodles owners will enjoy exclusive perks and benefits. The owners of the original NFT collection may provide licenses to certain projects, but the Doodles 2 NFT avatar owners will not.

Holguin likens the first 10,000 NFTs to a “black card” in the credit card business, and thus considers them as the key to the Doodles ecosystem. He claims that becoming a member will lead to positive changes on that world. Holguin is confident that Doodles 2 players will want the first game as well.

“We really believe that you’re not going to want one or the other,” he said. “You’re going to want both.”
