Melania Trump celebrates Independence Day early with $50 Solana collectibles

The Trumps have returned with another set of NFTs. Just two months after former US President Donald Trump released a second batch of his NFT trading cards, effectively destroying the value of the previous set, his wife Melania has released a set of NFTs inspired by the impending Independence Day holiday.

Melania Trump’s Solana-based NFTs, dubbed “The 1776 Collection,” rely on well-known American imagery, such as photographs of the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore connected to animated signs. Each digital collectible costs $50 and comes in seven different designs, with a total run of 3,500 NFTs.

Melania Trump’s Twitter account shared the company’s message about the sale this morning, and the NFTs are being offered through a website called USA Collectibles. The website also sells “POTUS TRUMP” NFTs with images of the former president and his wife.

Although it is not specified on the NFT website, a Fox News report claims that an undisclosed portion of sales would fund Fostering the Future, a component of Melania Trump’s larger Be Best resource initiative aimed at assisting foster children.

Over the last two years, the Trumps have accumulated a substantial track record in the NFT industry. Melania Trump was the first of the two to launch her own NFT in December 2021, alongside executives from Solana Labs, the startup behind the Solana blockchain.

She produced more NFTs in 2022, when Donald Trump debuted his popular digital trading card collection, with 45,000 total NFTs sold for $99 each on Ethereum scaling network Polygon. Each NFT was linked to a potential special benefit, such as supper with the former president or an invitation to a group Zoom conference with him.

Despite widespread ridicule, the NFTs sold out in 24 hours and were the buzz of both the NFT world and mainstream spectators, leading the resale value to skyrocket. At their peak, Trump cards sold for more than $1,000 each on secondary markets, and the NFTs have produced more than $20 million in sales to date.

Trump then distributed 47,000 additional NFTs in April for $99 each, causing the value of the initial NFTs to plummet drastically. On the secondary market, the original Trump digital trading cards start at $185 worth of ETH, while the second set starts at about half the mint price—around $54 worth of ETH.
